HISTORY

Excavations in Dağköy and Yörükler villages revealed tombs from the fist century BC. The bathhouse in Yörükler is a genoese or roman edifice.

Inhabitants of turkish stock descend from turcomans migrating from the Central Asia, and circassian and georgian masses fleeing from the onslaught of russian army in 1877 joined them.

GEOGRAPHY

The town, located at the eastern edge of Kızılırmak delta, has an altitude of 10 metres. It is bordered by the Black Sea, Samsun and Bafra clockwise from the north.

CLIMATE

Agriculture, animalraising and fishing are the main occupations within the subprefecture. Fishing is made both at the sea and in the lakes. Walnuts and apiculture, recently introduced to the region, have become important money earners. Basketry and carpetry also contribute to the local economy.

TRANSPORTATION

Access to Ondokuzmayıs, located at a distance of 33 kilometres on Ankara-Samsun interstate highway, is easy since vehicles are available round the clock to and from Samsun.

SIGHTSEEING

A tumulus discovered within the town dates back to roman period. There is a good number of mosques and shrines from various periods in the region.

Emigrants from Caucasia and Georgia organise a springtime picnic where cultural, musical and dancing activities are performed.

OVERNIGHTING AND MEALS

There are no hotels in the town. Overnighting is available for 4 to 5 persons at the guesthouse of Provincial Agriculture Directorate.

Meals are available along the seaside in a number of restaurants.
