EDUCATION IN PRE-REPUBLICAN ERA

At the beginning of twentieth century when the Ottoman Empire was in actual process of crumbling into pieces, the education had also come to a standstil in all respects. The new western schools were not able to cope with this decline and these two education systems had come into grips with each other and two generations intolerant against each other had bee produced.

The first senior hig school was opened in 1892 in Samsun which was traditionally the centre of christian schools. It was followed in 1912 by a commercial senior high school.

EDUCATION IN POST-REPUBLICAN ERA

There were 68 schools, 160 teachers and 4.471 students in the first year of the Republic. These figures were 1.411, 8.796 and 222.864 for the scolar year 1997-1998.

Primary Education

There were a total of 1333 primary schools, 4.733 teachers and 177.155 students in the povince in the same scolar year.

The 19 May Unnıversity

The 19 May University, established in 1975, has today 9 faulties, 13 academies and 3 institutes with 1.184 academicians and 26.069 students. The Education Hospital of the Faculty of Medicine serves also the whole province with a capacity of 900 beds.

Youth and Sports

The organised sports in Samsun may be said to have started with the wrestling bouts in Willie weddings. Horse races held on Sundays at the city of Samsun has been an activity receiving much attention from the citizens.

Ten sports clubs came into existence in Samsun in 1923. They are presently active in 23 sports branches.

History of Samsunspor Club

The Samsunspor club was formed in 1965 with the merger of four amateur clubs. Its colours are red and white and Atatürk's silhouette on a rearing horse is its emblem. It is only sports displaying Atatürk's image on its uniforms.
